Discussion Question 4
4. Usually, after reading coverage from multiple sources, you begin to see a pattern of coverage. In other words, there is always a bit of background information found in each of the stories. What information, sources, quotes, etc., were found in the majority of the linked articles? Why do think it was done this way?

The background information that is in every story is about Woods crashing his car at the end of his driveway and stories breaking about his "personal" life. I didn't see a lot of quotes that were the same throughout the stories, but I did see articles using different newspapers as a source. I think this happens because the Media is all too consumed with getting the message out first and fastest. People aren't taking time to research facts, but if someone else already did it, they may as well use the information just to get a story published and inform their readers. I thought it was odd that newspapers would be used as sources for other bits of information, wouldn't that make the reader go to the other source of news?
ReplyDeleteSome of the information that I saw repeated and reitterated was that our society looks to sports figures, and celebrities for that matter, as untouchable pillars of the community. That we look to them in there lives for guidance, when they are just the same as you and I. Another thing repeated over and over was the wreck that started it all. But in all honesty, if Woods had so many different girlfriends on the side, one was going to come out of the wood work eventually to make her presence felt.
ReplyDeleteAs well as Jeff, I see society putting sports figures and celebrities in a class of unhuman proportions where they do not make mistakes. But when they do it is some phenomenon that can not be left to work out on its own. Media repeats this in every article stating how much of a shock this is, but people cheat and have affairs all the time. Media just needs to remember that Tiger Woods and other celebrities are human too.
